The Jeff Gannon/James Guckert fiasco is small potatoes compared to the fact that the Government Accountability Office has determined the White House's fake news feeds are illegal, but the Bush folks continue to distribute them.
Cox News Services reports, "The White House, intent on continuing to crank out "video news releases" that look like television news stories, has told government agency heads to ignore a Government Accountability Office memo criticizing the practice as illegal propaganda."
"This is not just a legal issue, it's also an ethical matter," [GAO Comptroller David] Walker said. "The taxpayers have a right to know when the government is trying to influence them with their own money."
The New York Times has a related story.
The fun doesn't stop with faux news feeds, but Bush continues his barnstorming to dismantle Social Security with bogus "town hall" meetings, too. (Can the layers of deception get any thicker?) Just as he did during his campaign, he packs the hall with supporters who coo and cluck over how wonderful his ideas are, while any dissent is stifled.
This sort of govenment control is not unlike Soviet style propaganda. The Bush White House is looking more and more like the Kremlin of yesterday and today.
