Recently, Nat Hentoff wrote of the committees of correspondence started by Sam Adams and the Sons of Liberty as a critical tool for informing the population about the actions of King George's regime. The committees built support for the revolution by their missives. Perhaps such sites as this may act in a similar fashion--at least for a time. One significant difference between the material produced by Adams and his colleagues and the web is that is was very easy to share a broadside with friends without being observed. The net, now given the power of the government to surveil all electronic transactions, is less protected and therefore less powerful; writers are easily tracked and intimidated. Nevertheless, the more we talk about what is going on, the less easily our freedoms will be eroded.

What Hentoff did not make clear was the the Committees of Correspondence are still functioning in a traditional sense. Take a look at http://www.cofc.org/index.htm for more information about them.
